Chapter 27

Monday Morning

“Hey, Wags.” Sabre spotted Richard Wagner just before he entered Department One.

He stopped and pivoted. “What’s up, Sabre?”

“Do you have the Dumas case?”

“I was just about to attend that hearing. Are you on it?”

“No. But I have information that might be helpful. Dené is my cousin—at least I think she is.”

He looked taken aback. “There isn’t anything in the reports about any living relatives. Her mother just passed away, and her father is unknown.”

“I have reason to believe her father is my first cousin, Travis Blodgett.”

“Do you have an address for him?”

“And a phone number,” Sabre said. “I may also have more information for you in the next few days.”

“Do you know Dené?” Wagner asked.

“We’ve never met.”

“Does she have other family? Because right now, foster care is the only thing in this child’s future. I would love to find family members for her.”

“If Travis is the father, Dené also has two aunts and two uncles. But I don’t think any of them would be suitable, or even interested, in taking care of her. The girl’s grandmother, my aunt, passed away a week ago yesterday, and I’m handling her estate. I’m learning a lot of new things about this family.”

“The grandmother died a few days after the mother?”

“That’s right,” Sabre said. “Can you get a continuance and try to get her alleged father into court?”

“Does the father know he has, or might have, a kid?”

“I have no idea.”

“Did the grandmother know?”

“She was aware of a grandchild named Dené, but I don’t think she had an address or contact with the child in the beginning. Goldie left behind quite a few undelivered birthday cards with Dené’s name on them.”

“At some point, we’ll make sure she gets those.”

“Have you met Dené yet?” Sabre asked.

“I saw her yesterday for the first time. She’s a cute kid, and smart as a whip.”

“How old is she?”

“She’ll be twelve in November, I think.” He checked his file. “Yeah, the tenth.”

“Thanks, Wags.”

“The judge will have to continue this hearing if for no other reason than to give notice to the father. How long do you need?”

“Just a few days. The sooner we determine if Travis is the father, the better.”

“Keep me posted.” Wagner entered the courtroom.

Sabre sat on the bench and called the number JP had given her.

“Doyle Law Group,” a young voice said.

“I’m Attorney Sabre Brown, and I’m trying to reach Attorney Doyle.”

“What is this regarding?”

“Goldie Forney and Tanya Dumas.”

“One moment please.”

Less than a minute passed before someone answered. “This is Rose Marie Doyle.” Her voice was strong and professional. “May I help you?”

“I hope so. My aunt, Goldie Forney, recently passed away, and—”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

“Thank you.”

“What do you need from me?” Doyle asked.

“I understand that you drafted the paperwork for Tanya Dumas, making Goldie Forney the guardian for her daughter Dené. Tanya passed away a few days before Goldie, and now the child is facing foster care. I need a copy of the document.”

“No problem. Just email or fax something establishing that you’re the trustee or executor of the estate, and I’ll get it right over to you.
